I laid back on my elbows, my belly too full to sit upright anymore. Who knew near-death experiences could boost an appetite like that? Or maybe it had been that Maginarian liqueur that had made me ravenous. Whatever it was, I was stuffed now.

Slade’s dark gaze razed over me from across the remnants of the decadent spread. He slowly sipped from the flute, regarding me over the rim. That familiar swirl of heat whenever he was around burned low in my core. And with my inhibitions dulled by the bubbly liquor, nothing good could come of it.

Knight stood and extended a hand. “I hoped you’d entertain a walk with me?”

I released my lip from the iron hold of my teeth—which I hadn’t even realized I’d been doing, and nodded quickly. “Yeah, definitely.” I jumped up, eager to get away from Slade’s sinful stare. I wiggled my fingers at him and Castiel and placed my hand in Knight’s.

Besides escaping the relentless temptation of Slade, I still hadn’t had much of a chance to talk to the quiet prince and with the first elimination looming ever closer, I needed to give all the guys a fair chance before making a decision.

The prince’s fingers were loose, casual around my palm, nothing like when Deacon or Fallon held my hand. Their holds were like vice grips, like I’d run away if they didn’t succeed in cutting off all circulation from my fingers. He didn’t say anything as we meandered around the top of the cliff toward the small brook that rippled around the circumference. There wasn’t far to go, but I hoped we were at least out of earshot of the other two bachelors.

I was about to open my mouth to attempt to pry something out of the reticent male when he stopped and turned to me. “I apologize,” he blurted. “I’m not very good at this sort of thing.”

“Walking?” I teased.

A soft chuckle split his fine lips. “No, dating. But I suppose that’s obvious by now.”

I shrugged. “This whole group dating on live TV thing is new to all of us, so no worries.”

He rewarded me with a gracious smile. “You see, where I come from, it’s rare one has the opportunity of picking their spouse. It’s typically something arranged, sometimes even before birth.”

I couldn’t help cringing at the thought. Fated mates was bad enough but having zero control over who you’d marry sent a bout of nausea clawing up my throat. At least the mate bond forged an attraction, but without it, I couldn’t imagine.

“Don’t look so revolted.” He chuckled again. “Most of the time it isn’t all that bad, and after all, it’s all we royals know.” He pressed his mouth into a thin line. “There I go again, spilling secrets.”

“It’s okay, your highness.” I shot him a playful wink. “So why are you here then?”

He paused for a moment, his light brows knitting. “My betrothed died, unfortunately.”

“Oh!” My head snapped back, my mouth curving into a capital O. “I’m so sorry.
